Binge eating disorder or BED is a problem of perhaps millions of Americans. The risks of having this problem are many, the first of which is obesity. Obesity, as many know, can cause many health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and even cancer. Aside from health risks, the disorder can also cause a person who suffers from it to develop low self-esteem, cause disruption in his or her daily routine, and even withdraw from social interaction due to embarrassment of their disorder. That is why it is important that people who have BED get help as soon as possible. What then are the best treatments for this disorder?

Experts have debated whether the best way to treat binge eating is to address the weight loss first or to change the person’s behavior or self-image. Experts believe that making a person who suffers from BED lose weight first can lower the risk of health complications. However, binge eaters find diets difficult to follow and they easily lapse to their old ways without supervision. That is why most experts now agree that psychosocial treatment, such as counseling and therapy, is the best way to treat BED. Below are examples of BED prevention and therapy:

* Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - This treatment first works to make a person eat normally again. After that, focus shifts on making the person reevaluate his or her beliefs regarding self-image, weight, and body shape.
* Interpersonal Psychotherapy - This treatment focuses on a person’s interpersonal relationship. It also points out whether those relationships cause a person to suffer from the disease. It does not focus directly on the person’s beliefs.
* Dialectical Behavior Therapy - This treatment proposes that sufferers of the disorder can be treated through increased behavioral skills. This is done through group counseling and open forums with people who suffer from the disorder.

Remember that BED is a disorder with many risks. Encourage a friend or a family member to get help as soon as possible.
